Once upon a time, during the Suryavansha (the solar dynasty). There ruled a righteous and mighty king named Mandhata. His kingdom was prosperous, and his subjects lived in enough. But, a severe drought struck the land, and for three years, there was no rainfall. The people suffered, and even the rituals and yajnas came to a halt due to the scarcity of food.
Desperate to find a solution. The distressed citizens approached King Mandhata and implored him to ease their suffering. The king, deep concerned for his people, sought guidance from the great sage Angira.
Sage Angira revealed that the root cause of the drought lay. In the fact that a Shudra (a person from the lowest caste) was performing intense penance (tapasya). According to the scriptures, only Brahmins were eligible to undertake such austerities. Due to this anomaly, the rains had ceased, and the kingdom faced adversity.
King Mandhata, perplexed by this revelation, wondered. How he could resolve the situation without harming the Shudra. Sage Angira advised him to perform a yajna (sacrificial ritual) to purify the land and appease Lord Vishnu.
Following the sage’s instructions, King Mandhata organized a grand yajna. As the sacred fire blazed, the Shudra arrived, continuing his penance. The king, torn between duty and compassion, sought a way to uphold righteousness without causing harm.
